Vizag: KIMS Hospitals Seethammadhara Doctors Restore Shoulder Using Rare Donor Bone Graft Procedure

Visakhapatnam, Apr 30 (TNT): Doctors at KIMS Hospitals Seethammadhara on Thursday said that they have achieved a rare medical milestone by successfully restoring shoulder function in a patient using a bone graft harvested from a brain-dead donor, an uncommon procedure in orthopaedic care.

According to Srinivas Gollangi, Consultant Sports Orthopaedic and Arthroscopic Surgeon, the complex surgery involved procuring a donor bone graft from a bone bank in Bengaluru and transporting it to Visakhapatnam for reconstruction.

The patient, a 40-year-old man, had been suffering from recurrent shoulder dislocations caused by epilepsy-related falls.

Despite undergoing multiple surgeries earlier, his condition persisted, severely affecting his quality of life.

Doctors identified extensive rotator cuff damage along with a significant bone defect in the humeral head, making conventional arthroscopic procedures ineffective.

After stabilising the patient’s epilepsy, the medical team performed an open rotator cuff repair combined with allograft bone grafting.

The donor bone was used to reconstruct the damaged portion of the shoulder joint, restoring both structure and stability. The patient has since recovered well and is now able to carry out daily activities independently, doctors said.

The procedure marks the first successful use of such allograft bone grafting for shoulder reconstruction in the state, representing a significant advancement in specialised orthopaedic treatment.
