Chennai, Apr 26 (TNT): Tamil Nadu Telugu Yuva Sakthi President and Film Producer Keti Reddy Jagadishwara Reddy, on Sunday cautioned against “misleading propaganda” linking higher voter turnout to certain victory for any political party, calling it a threat to democratic awareness.
In a statement, Reddy said claims that increased polling percentage automatically translates into electoral success are “false and dangerous,” aimed at misleading the public and distorting democratic understanding.
He pointed out that multiple factors contribute to higher polling percentages, including large-scale voter list corrections under the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR), such as removal of duplicate, deceased, migrated and inactive voters.
Citing examples, he said states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu witnessed significant voter list revisions, which can alter percentage calculations without necessarily indicating a shift in voter preference.
Explaining with an illustration, he noted that when the total number of voters is reduced after corrections, even a similar number of votes cast can result in a higher polling percentage, creating a misleading impression of increased support.
Reddy said similar trends could be seen in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana due to migration, addition of young voters and voter roll updates.
He also warned against speculative betting based on polling percentages, urging people not to make hasty conclusions before the official results.
“The final verdict lies in the EVMs. Increased polling percentage reflects participation, not guaranteed victory,” he said, appealing to citizens to stay alert and avoid being influenced by misinformation.
