Hyderabad, Apr 26 (TNT): Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has achieved a major milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing with the delivery of a production-grade Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo (WGHWT) to Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL).
The torpedo was handed over at BDL’s Visakhapatnam unit on April 23, marking the successful productionisation of India’s first indigenous wire-guided heavyweight torpedo, a defence release said here.
Dr. R. V. Hara Prasad, Director General (NS&M), Commodore A. Madhavarao (Retd.), Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director NSTL, along with teams from BDL, NSTL and the Indian Navy were present on the occasion.
BDL, acting as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP), collaborated with NSTL in realising the advanced torpedo system.
The weapon has been developed in both practice and combat configurations, representing a key step in strengthening India’s naval defence capabilities.
Officials said the torpedo is equipped with state-of-the-art homing and propulsion systems, along with advanced search, attack and re-attack capabilities, significantly enhancing the operational strength of the Indian Navy.
The development is part of the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and highlights the growing success of collaboration between Defence Research and Development Organisation laboratories and defence public sector units.
The achievement also reflects the role of industry partners, including MSMEs, in building a strong indigenous defence ecosystem.
