Piyush Goyal Wraps Up Canada Visit, Pushes CEPA Talks and Investment Ties

New Delhi, May 28 (TNT): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday concluded a three-day visit to Canada after holding a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, investment and technology partnerships between the two countries.

Goyal’s visit, covering Ottawa and Toronto, focused on accelerating negotiations for the proposed India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and boosting economic engagement across sectors including infrastructure, clean energy, technology and advanced manufacturing.

Addressing students and faculty at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto, Goyal highlighted India’s economic growth, reforms and rising global profile under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the visit, Goyal met Doug Ford, Premier of Ontari and discussed opportunities for cooperation in manufacturing, technology, clean energy, food processing and critical minerals.

He also held talks with Goldy Hyder, President and CEO of the Business Council of Canada., on enhancing business-to-business partnerships and strengthening commercial ties between the two countries.

The Union minister met executives from major Canadian institutional investors, including Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and CPP Investments, to discuss long-term investment opportunities in India across infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, logistics and digital infrastructure.

Goyal also visited the Ontario Centre of Innovation and discussed cooperation in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, highlighting India’s expanding startup and innovation ecosystem.

The Union Minister interacted with members of the Indo-Canadian business community and the Canada-India Foundation, underscoring the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening economic and people-to-people ties.

According to the government, Goyal led the largest-ever Indian business delegation to Canada, comprising representatives from more than 100 Indian companies.

India and Canada currently have bilateral trade of around $8.5 billion, with both countries targeting an expansion to $50 billion by 2030 through deeper economic cooperation and the proposed CEPA agreement.
