Hyd: CSIR-NGRI Hosts National Roadshow on E-Tractor, E-Tiller on Technology Day
Hyderabad, May 14(TNT): CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute on Thursday hosted a nationwide roadshow on electric tractor and electric tiller technologies as part of National Technology Day celebrations, highlighting sustainable and technology-driven agricultural solutions for small and marginal farmers.
The electric tractor and electric tiller showcased during the event were developed by CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute with a focus on providing clean, cost-effective and low-maintenance alternatives to conventional diesel-powered farm machinery.
Officials said the compact design, ease of operation and reduced vibration levels of the machines make them particularly suitable for women farmers and smallholders.
The nationwide roadshow, originally flagged off by Jitendra Singh on National Science Day 2025, has been travelling across major agricultural regions of the country to promote awareness and practical demonstrations of the technology.
At the Hyderabad event, farmers tested the E-Tractor and E-Tiller under field conditions, reinforcing the “lab-to-land” approach promoted by CSIR institutions.
Addressing the gathering, Prakash Kumar, Director CSIR-NGRI, said such farmer-centric innovations directly address the needs of marginal communities where affordability, operational efficiency and ease of use are crucial.
He also highlighted the institute’s research activities related to geotechnical studies and groundwater exploration and management.
Chief Guest, Srinivasa Reddy, Director, CSIR-IICT, highlighted the ergonomic and economic advantages of the technologies, particularly for women farmers and small agricultural holdings.
Dr. Naresh Chandra Murmu, Director, CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur, said the electric farm equipment has the potential to emerge as an eco-friendly replacement for diesel-powered agricultural machinery.
The event witnessed participation from more than 150 stakeholders, including farmers, industry representatives and policymakers. Farmers suggested improvements such as enhanced power capacity, solar charging options and subsidised access to encourage wider adoption.
Officials said the nationwide roadshow would conclude at CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology as part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and clean-energy technologies.
