Centre Launches AI-Enabled Rural Internal Audit Portal to Strengthen Transparency in Rural Development Programmes

New Delhi, June 28 (TNT): Union Minister for Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday launched the AI-enabled Rural Internal Audit Portal, a first-of-its-kind digital platform aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability and technology-driven governance in the implementation of rural development programmes.

The portal was unveiled during the Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Sammelan at the Pusa Campus in New Delhi.

Developed by the Ministry of Rural Development in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the platform provides end-to-end digital management of internal audits covering both risk-based and compliance audits.

Conceived by the Office of the Chief Controller of Accounts (CCA), the portal integrates audit planning, execution, reporting, compliance management, monitoring and analytics into a single digital ecosystem, replacing the conventional paper-based and fragmented audit system.

According to the Ministry, the platform will facilitate digital audit management, maintain a central repository of audit records, enable risk-based audit planning, automate audit reports, monitor Action Taken Reports (ATRs) in real time and provide analytical dashboards for improved decision-making.

It also features a geospatial ‘Map View’ module to track audit coverage across the country and identify audit units that have never been audited.

The portal has been built on a secure and scalable technology architecture with role-based access control, secure API integration, audit logging, periodic security assessments, disaster recovery protocols and AI-ready capabilities for future risk assessment and predictive analytics.

The Ministry said the idea for a unified audit management system emerged from the need to address delays, manual processes and fragmented record-keeping in conventional audit practices.

A pilot project was launched in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh in April 2025 before the platform was rolled out nationwide from October 2025.

Highlighting the impact of the initiative, the Ministry said the portal has standardised audit reporting, improved monitoring of compliance, reduced dependence on physical records and transformed internal audit into a strategic governance tool supporting programme effectiveness and financial accountability.

The Rural Internal Audit Portal has also received in-principle approval from the Office of the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) for adoption across Civil Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, recognising it as a benchmark platform for strengthening digital public financial management.
