Chennai, Apr 30 (TNT): V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, who attended the 67th Institute Day celebrations of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT M) as the Chief Guest here on Thursday, highlighted the crucial role of technology and talent in achieving India’s long-term economic ambitions.
Addressing students, faculty, alumni and staff, Dr. Nageswaran spoke on the theme “Technology, Talent and the Trillion-Dollar Ambition of India,” noting that India’s GDP, currently around $3.9 trillion, could potentially double to $7.8 trillion in the next six years.
He emphasized that achieving the long-term goal of a $30 trillion economy by the centenary of Independence would require sustained growth, technological advancement and strong research capabilities.
He stressed the need for India to develop frontier research in science and engineering, enhance its ability to adapt global technologies to local conditions, and scale innovations effectively.
He also highlighted that institutions like IIT Madras play a pivotal role in translating research into large-scale economic impact.
The event celebrated the institute’s continued excellence, including its achievement of securing the top rank in the Government of India’s NIRF ‘Overall’ category for the seventh consecutive year and in the ‘Engineering’ category for the tenth consecutive year.
Delivering the Presidential Address, V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, reflected on the institute’s journey and reaffirmed its commitment to nation-building through education, research and service.
He also highlighted the launch of ‘IITM Global,’ an initiative aimed at transforming IIT Madras into a multinational university.
Several awards were presented during the meeting to recognize outstanding contributions by faculty, students, alumni and staff, marking the occasion as both a celebration of achievements and a reaffirmation of the institute’s vision for the future.
