Indian Railways’ Punctuality Improves to 77.11% in 2026-27 So Far

New Delhi, Oct 21 (TNT): Indian Railways has recorded a punctuality rate of 77.11 per cent in 2026-27 so far, maintaining performance above 77 per cent for the third consecutive year, despite heavy passenger demand, according to the Railway Ministry.

The punctuality rate improved from 69.2 per cent in 2018-19 to 77.43 per cent in 2025-26.

The current performance is also higher than the 73.62 per cent recorded in 2023-24, the ministry said.

The improvement has been supported by enhanced monitoring, timetable rationalisation, better maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, while ensuring safe and comfortable passenger travel, it said.

The ministry said punctuality figures circulating on social media were being presented out of context, particularly when comparing regular railway operations with the COVID-19 pandemic period.

It noted that the unusually high punctuality figures recorded in 2020-21 and 2021-22 coincided with a period when fewer trains were operating due to pandemic-related restrictions.
