Telangana Focuses on Lifestyle Medicine to Tackle Burnout, Non-Communicable Diseases: Chongthu

Hyderabad, Oct 10 (TNT): Telangana has screened around 1.49 crore people for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at their homes, identifying approximately 18 lakh people with hypertension and more than nine lakh with diabetes, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Christina Z. Chongthu said on Saturday.

Addressing the seventh edition of the International Conference on Lifestyle Medicine (ISLMCON 2026), organised by the Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine at The Park Hotel here, she stressed the need to strengthen preventive healthcare and address lifestyle-related risk factors amid rising stress and burnout.

Held under the theme “From Burnout to Balance: Health through Lifestyle Medicine”, the conference focused on the role of lifestyle changes in improving health and preventing diseases.

Chongthu said increasing workplace pressures, changing family structures and caregiving responsibilities were contributing to stress and burnout.

She emphasised the importance of shifting the focus from treating diseases to addressing their underlying lifestyle-related factors.

Nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management and social connectedness were essential to promoting holistic well-being, she said.

Dr. Lakshmi Sundar, President of the Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ISLM), said burnout was an often-overlooked factor contributing to several health conditions.

She stressed the need to address both the root causes and symptoms of illness through lifestyle medicine.

She said the society aimed to increase awareness, strengthen India-specific research and empower healthcare professionals and communities to incorporate healthy practices into everyday life as part of preventive healthcare.

Dr. P. Kishan, President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Telangana, and Dr. D. Dwarakanath Reddy, former president of IMA Telangana, were among those who attended the conference.

The Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine is a not-for-profit organisation comprising medical and allied health professionals, including nutritionists, physiotherapists and psychologists. It offers a certification programme in lifestyle medicine in collaboration with the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.
