Whirlpool Launches AI-Based Freshness Detection in Luxuriem Refrigerators

Hyderabad, Oct 27 (TNT): Whirlpool of India Ltd has introduced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered freshness detection technology in its Luxuriem four-door refrigerators, designed to alert users to changes in the freshness of stored fruits and vegetables and help reduce food wastage.

Its proprietary 6th Sense AI technology uses an iFresh sensor integrated into the crisper drawer to detect ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen, the company said in a release on Tuesday.

The system scans produce every 10 seconds and alerts consumers when rising ethylene levels indicate possible over-ripening.

The technology aims to help households identify produce that needs attention, particularly items stored for extended periods and those showing no obvious external signs of ripening.

Whirlpool said it had worked with food scientists to develop the system for the diverse range of fruits and vegetables consumed in India.

Its Full-Spectrum Produce Detection feature is designed to respond to varying ethylene emissions from produce, including apples, pears, kiwis, avocados and peaches, as well as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.

A real-time user interface allows consumers to view the freshness status of stored produce.

The system also uses feedback from users, who can check their produce and reset alerts, to adjust future notification thresholds according to household preferences.

Commenting on the launch, Nakul Tewari, Vice-President (Marketing) of Whirlpool of India, said the technology addressed a common household problem in which fruits and vegetables bought in bulk are forgotten in refrigerators and begin to over-ripen.

The company said the technology was an application of on-device AI designed to address everyday food storage challenges.

The expanded Luxuriem four-door refrigerator range will be available in 645-litre, 651-litre and 654-litre capacities, with prices starting at Rs 98,000.

The models will be sold through retail outlets and online platforms across India.
