UP: Former Railway Engineer Sentenced to Four Years in Bribery Case
Lucknow, Aug. 4 (TNT): A CBI court in Lucknow on Tuesday sentenced a former railway engineer to four years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 in a bribery case investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The convicted official, Girijesh Kumar Gaur, was serving as Assistant Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer (ADSTE), North Central Railway, Banda, Uttar Pradesh, at the time of the offence.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on May 27, 2016, following a complaint alleging that Gaur demanded a bribe of ₹20,000—₹10,000 before sanction and ₹10,000 after sanction of bills—for clearing bills worth ₹80,000 relating to a vehicle engaged on contract with the ADSTE office in Banda.
The agency laid a trap on the same day and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting ₹9,700 as illegal gratification against the alleged demand of ₹10,000 at his residence.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on June 24, 2016.
Following the trial, the CBI court convicted Gaur and sentenced him to four years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a ₹20,000 fine in the bribery case.
