Chennai, May 6 (TNT): Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President C. Joseph Vijay is expected to meet R. V. Arlekar on Wednesday to stake claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections by winning 108 seats, but remained short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
The party’s tally is expected to come down to 107 after Vijay resigns from the Trichy East Assembly constituency on Wednesday.
In the effective strength of the House, TVK would require the support of 117 MLAs to form the government.
According to reports, Vijay is likely to seek the Governor’s permission to form the government and may be sworn in as Chief Minister on May 7 if he succeeds in securing the required support.
Meanwhile, senior Indian National Congress leader K. C. Venugopal confirmed that TVK leaders had approached the Congress seeking support for government formation in the state.
The Congress leadership said it was committed to supporting a “secular government” in Tamil Nadu and indicated that discussions regarding support to TVK were in progress.
On Tuesday, M. K. Stalin tendered his resignation along with the Council of Ministers, which was accepted by the Governor.
According to an official release from Raj Bhavan, the Governor requested Stalin and his Council of Ministers to continue in office until alternative arrangements are made.
