Hyderabad, May 3 (TNT) : The state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) on Sunday announced it has received preliminary environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for its ambitious Ramagundam Coal Mine Project.
The formal clearance documents are expected within the next 10 days, marking a key milestone for the state-run coal major which had been awaiting approval for the project, the mining company said in a release here.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti, along with company officials, played a key role in securing the approval.
The integrated project, designed with an annual production capacity of 21 million tonnes, is the largest in SCCL’s history.
It aims to extract about 314.98 million tonnes of coal reserves by combining multiple existing opencast and underground mining areas.
The company said the project will help compensate for declining output from aging mines and ensure sustained coal supply to major consumers, including NTPC Ramagundam.
The project also focuses on optimal utilisation of residual coal by converting certain underground mines into opencast operations.
It incorporates environmentally sustainable practices such as scientific backfilling of mined-out areas to minimise ecological impact.
With an estimated investment of ₹2,194 crore, the project is expected to generate employment for around 5,500 people.
It is also projected to extend the operational life of the Ramagundam region’s mining activity by nearly 25 years.
SCCL officials described the clearance as a major boost to the company’s long-term production plans and to the regional economy.
