Telangana CM Seeks Special Parliament Session on Women’s Quota; Says INDIA Bloc Ready to Back Bill**
Hyderabad, May 21 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday demanded that the Union Government convene a special session of Parliament for the implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies.
He asserted that the INDIA Alliance was ready to support the legislation.
Paying tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, Reddy said the proposed women’s reservation law should be enacted in the spirit of Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for political empowerment of women.
He said Rajiv Gandhi had pioneered women’s political representation through reservations in local bodies and stressed that the same inspiration should guide the implementation of reservation in Assemblies and Parliament.
The Chief Minister also cautioned political parties against politicising the issue of women’s reservation and urged all stakeholders to support the bill in the national interest.
Recalling Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions to the country, Reddy described him as a visionary who ushered India into the technology era and laid the foundation for the nation’s modern development through liberalised policies and information technology reforms.
He said the Telangana government was following Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals in promoting women’s empowerment and welfare initiatives.
The Chief Minister also remembered the role of Sonia Gandhi in the formation of Telangana, stating that she had taken a courageous decision in fulfilling the long-standing aspiration for a separate State.
Reddy said Telangana shared an inseparable bond with the Gandhi family and added that the people of the State would continue to cherish their contributions.
