Tamil Nadu Political crisis ends as TVK Secures Majority with VCK Support

Chennai, May 9 (TNT): The political crisis in Tamil Nadu appeared to come to an end on Saturday after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) extended unconditional support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), enabling actor-turned-politician Vijay to secure the required majority to form the government.

With support from various parties, except the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Vijay’s camp claimed support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly.

Sources said supporting parties had also submitted letters of unconditional support as per constitutional procedures.

TVK had emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections by winning 108 seats, falling short of the majority mark required to form the government.

However, following Vijay’s reported decision to resign from the Trichy East Assembly seat, the effective strength required for majority was expected to reduce to 117 in the House.

Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Saturday evening for the fourth time and submitted letters of support from alliance partners and supporting parties, seeking an invitation to form the government.

After reviewing the support documents, the Governor reportedly granted permission for Vijay to assume office as Chief Minister.

Following the development, TVK leaders began preparations for the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to be held on Sunday morning.
