T-Mobile, Jio achieve world’s first 5G standalone roaming connection
New York, Sept 21 (TNT): T-Mobile and Reliance Jio have achieved the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection through interoperability enabled by Syniverse, marking a milestone in cross-border 5G connectivity, the companies said on Monday.
The achievement enables T-Mobile customers to experience 5G SA roaming while travelling internationally, with the technology designed to provide faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connectivity across networks.
The companies said the technology could support applications including Internet of Things (IoT), real-time communications and immersive technologies that require consistent, high-performance connectivity.
Syniverse’s connectivity platform enabled secure interconnection between the T-Mobile and Jio networks and supported the deployment of the 5G SA roaming capability.
T-Mobile Chief Network Officer Ankur Kapoor said the company had been working towards a 5G Standalone future since 2020 and described Jio as its partner in the initiative.
Jio Head of International Network, Partnership and Services Mark Yarkosky said the interoperability between the two 5G SA networks could enable new consumer and enterprise services, including AI-enabled applications.
Syniverse Chief Product Officer John Wick said the company’s platform and security capabilities would support operators in testing, validating and deploying 5G SA roaming as more networks adopt the technology.
