Renowned Tamil Filmmaker Bharathiraja Passes Away at 84; TN Govt to Accord State Honours

Chennai, June 10 (TNT): Renowned filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, passed away here on Wednesday following age-related ailments.

He was 84.

Fondly known as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (Pinnacle of Directors), Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

A towering figure in Tamil cinema, Bharathiraja revolutionised filmmaking by taking stories out of studio settings and into rural landscapes, bringing realism and a distinct visual style to the screen.

His directorial debut, 16 Vayathinile, released in 1977, is widely regarded as a landmark in Tamil cinema.

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South and several other honours.

In 2004, he was conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.

Bharathiraja also played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of several actors and technicians.

He introduced and nurtured talents such as Radikaa Sarathkumar, Revathi and Radha, besides mentoring numerous filmmakers and technicians who later made significant contributions to the industry.

News of his demise triggered an outpouring of grief from across the film fraternity, with actors, directors, producers, politicians and fans paying tribute to the legendary filmmaker’s legacy.

Recognising his immense contribution to cinema and culture, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that Bharathiraja would be accorded full state honours during his funeral.

Former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin described Bharathiraja as a filmmaker who transformed Tamil cinema and created a unique cinematic era.

He said the director’s memorable works would continue to occupy a permanent place in the history of Tamil cinema.

With Bharathiraja’s passing, Indian cinema has lost one of its most celebrated storytellers whose films captured the spirit, struggles and emotions of rural India and left an enduring impact on generations of filmmakers and audiences.
