PM Modi launches development projects worth Rs 4,700-Cr in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, July 17 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth over ₹4,700 crore in Chandigarh, covering healthcare, education and road infrastructure sectors.
Highlighting Chandigarh’s role as a model city for planned development and ease of living, the Prime Minister said the government has prioritised its systematic growth and modernisation.
The projects include major upgrades in healthcare facilities, educational infrastructure and road connectivity.
The Prime Minister highlighted initiatives such as the Integrated Command and Control Centre, Smart Traffic Management and Digital Governance, stating that more than ₹2,500 crore has been invested in making the city high-tech.
As part of the healthcare expansion, the Prime Minister announced new facilities at the medical institute, including a Neuroscience Centre, Mother and Child Centre and Critical Care Hospital Block, aimed at improving treatment facilities for people across the region.
He said Chandigarh serves as a major healthcare hub for neighbouring states and Union Territories, including Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
During his address, Modi highlighted the expansion of India’s healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of new AIIMS, medical colleges and specialty hospitals after 2014.
He also referred to initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and e-Sanjeevani, noting that telemedicine services have enabled remote access to specialist consultations.
The Prime Minister also spoke about progress in maternal and child healthcare, preventive health programmes and the fight against tuberculosis under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
On education and innovation, Modi said Chandigarh’s network of research, engineering and medical institutions provides a strong foundation for growth as a startup and technology hub.
He inaugurated the Kurukshetra Boys Hostel at Punjab Engineering College and laid the foundation for new research scholar accommodation facilities.
In the infrastructure sector, the Prime Minister inaugurated a six-lane greenfield highway from IT City to Kurali to ease airport road congestion and laid the foundation stone for the PR Seven Spur project to improve regional connectivity.
He also highlighted the launch of railway projects in Punjab and Haryana and the rollout of India’s first hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat, describing it as a major step towards clean and sustainable transportation.
The Prime Minister said the government’s focus remains on creating future-ready infrastructure, healthcare systems and technology-driven development to support the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
