New Delhi, May 4 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Election Commission of India (ECI) and security forces for their role in maintaining the “dignity of Indian democracy” during the Assembly elections.
Addressing party workers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters here, Modi described the 2026 Assembly election results across five states as a victory for the Constitution and democratic institutions.
According to trends, the BJP is poised to secure a strong majority in West Bengal, while the party has retained power in Assam.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is also set to continue in Puducherry.
The Prime Minister said the high voter turnout reflects the strength of India’s democratic framework.
“I congratulate the Election Commission, all those involved in the electoral process, and especially the security forces. History will remember your contribution to maintaining the dignity of Indian democracy,” he said.
“Today, not only has democracy won, but so has the Constitution. Our democratic institutions and processes have been strengthened,” he added.
Describing the day as “historic,” Modi said the results reflect public trust in democratic values and governance, adding that victory and defeat are integral to democracy.
He also referred to by-election victories for NDA candidates in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Nagaland and Tripura.
Counting of votes was held for Assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
