Obesity a Major Public Health Challenge; Kamineni Hospitals Launches Dedicated Weight Loss Centre

Hyderabad, June 23 (TNT): With obesity emerging as one of the most significant public health challenges in India, Kamineni Hospitals has launched a dedicated Weight Loss Centre here on Tuesday to provide comprehensive and personalised obesity management through a multidisciplinary approach.

The hospital said the initiative aims to address the rising prevalence of obesity and its associated health complications by offering scientific, evidence-based treatment and long-term support for sustainable weight loss.

Speaking at the launch, Consultant Endocrinologist Dr. B. Sravya said obesity should be viewed as a chronic disease rather than merely a lifestyle issue.

She noted that obesity is closely linked to several serious health conditions, including Type-2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver disease, sleep apnoea, infertility, osteoarthritis and certain cancers.

She said even a five to ten per cent reduction in body weight can significantly improve blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep quality and overall health outcomes, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention.

Senior Consultant Diabetologist Dr. Bhavani highlighted the growing global and national burden of obesity.

She said nearly 890 million people worldwide and over 250 million adults in India are living with obesity. Childhood and adolescent obesity is also rising at an alarming rate, she added.

According to Dr. Bhavani, Telangana has emerged as a major obesity hotspot, with a significant proportion of adults classified as overweight or obese.

Untreated obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, sleep disorders, joint ailments and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, she said.

Head of the Physiotherapy Department Dr. D. Srinagavani stressed the importance of physical activity in effective weight management.

She said excess body weight places considerable strain on joints and muscles, often resulting in pain, reduced mobility and further weight gain.

Structured exercise programmes, including aerobic conditioning, strength training and functional mobility exercises, help improve mobility, preserve muscle mass, enhance metabolism and prevent weight regain, she added.

Consultant Dietitian and Nutritionist B. Santosha said Medical Nutrition Therapy plays a critical role in obesity management.

She emphasised that personalised diet plans tailored to an individual’s medical condition, lifestyle and dietary habits are essential for managing obesity and associated disorders such as diabetes, PCOS, fatty liver disease, hypertension and cholesterol abnormalities.

The newly launched Weight Loss Centre brings together endocrinologists, diabetologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists, genetic specialists and bariatric experts under one roof to provide integrated obesity care.

Services offered at the centre include obesity assessment, metabolic and genetic risk evaluation, body composition analysis, personalised nutrition counselling, structured exercise programmes, medical management, behavioural therapy and long-term follow-up aimed at achieving sustainable weight loss and improved quality of life.
