Modi inaugurates CG Semi OSAT facility in Gujarat, calls it milestone in India’s semiconductor mission
Sanand (Gujarat), July 4 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility here, describing it as a significant milestone in India’s efforts to emerge as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, Modi said the commissioning of the facility reflected the country’s commitment to translating its vision of “Design in India” and “Make in India” into reality.
“Whatever India resolves to do, it firmly accomplishes,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the semiconductor mission launched a few years ago was steadily taking shape through investments in design, manufacturing and chip packaging.
Recalling that he had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2024, Modi said the facility had progressed rapidly, with chip testing commencing in August 2025 before the start of commercial operations.
He lauded the collaboration between Indian, Japanese and Thai partners in establishing the facility, saying it would provide fresh momentum to India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The Prime Minister said the plant has commenced commercial production with an annual capacity of 20 crore chips and expressed confidence that it would eventually scale up production to 500 crore units annually.
Emphasising the importance of developing integrated semiconductor clusters, Modi said manufacturing ecosystems comprising fabrication units, testing facilities, design centres, chemical suppliers and startups were essential for sustaining long-term growth.
He noted that the Sanand region was emerging as a semiconductor hub with investments by companies such as Micron, Kaynes and CG Semi, creating opportunities for ancillary industries and employment.
The Prime Minister said the rapid growth of India’s semiconductor sector was a continuation of the country’s electronics manufacturing expansion over the past decade.
He said India had transformed from a major importer of mobile phones into the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer and exporter, adding that electronics production had increased nearly seven-fold since 2014 while exports had grown eleven-fold.
Modi said the government’s focus had now shifted from manufacturing finished products to developing the complete semiconductor value chain, including chip design, fabrication, assembly, packaging, critical materials and supply chains.
Highlighting the employment potential of the sector, he said the semiconductor and artificial intelligence revolution would create opportunities in research, design, manufacturing and supply chain management, and urged young people to acquire new skills to take advantage of emerging technologies.
The Prime Minister also praised the participation of women, including those from tribal communities, in the semiconductor manufacturing workforce, describing their contribution as a reflection of India’s growing technological capabilities.
Reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to ease of doing business and policy stability, Modi said India was moving rapidly towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 and expressed confidence that the country’s semiconductor ecosystem would play a key role in achieving that goal.
