Ensure Uninterrupted Power Supply During Summer, Cut Costs: AP CM Naidu

Amaravati, Apr 27 ( TNT): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday directed officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the summer season despite rising demand, while stressing the need to reduce power purchase costs.

Reviewing the power sector at his camp office, the Chief Minister discussed summer supply management, the 2026–27 procurement plan and implementation of key schemes such as PM Surya Ghar and PM Kusum.

Officials informed that daily electricity demand during summer is expected to range between 275 and 285 million units, with consumption so far this month touching 6,397 million units, an increase of nearly 14 per cent compared to the same period last year, driven by heat conditions and industrial usage.

They said the average power purchase cost has been reduced from Rs 5.20 per unit in April 2025 to Rs 4.90 per unit by March 2026.

Naidu directed officials to further bring down the cost to Rs 4.60 per unit by the end of the year by exploring low-cost generation methods and global innovations.

Emphasising the role of technology, he called for enhanced research and analysis in the energy sector and suggested that AP Transco, AP Genco and other institutions utilise CSR funds for research.

He also proposed the establishment of an Energy University.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of clean energy, stating that more than 50 per cent of the state’s power generation should come from renewable sources by 2028–29.

Reviewing central schemes, he noted that over 52,000 solar rooftop connections have been provided under PM Surya Ghar and directed officials to accelerate implementation with a target of two lakh connections per month.

Under PM Kusum, around 2.94 lakh connections have been achieved so far, and he asked officials to complete the first phase by December.

Naidu also directed the establishment of electric vehicle charging stations across the state and called for awareness campaigns to promote EV adoption.

Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar and senior officials from power utilities attended the meeting.
