Early treatment can prevent most diabetes-related amputations: Plastic surgeon
Anantapur, July 14 (TNT): Most lower-limb amputations caused by diabetic foot complications can be prevented through early diagnosis and timely treatment, according to Dr Kammiti Varuntez, Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon at KIMS Saveera, Anantapur.
Marking Plastic Surgeon Day, Dr Varuntez said seemingly minor injuries such as cuts, blisters, thorn pricks or cracked heels could lead to serious complications in people with diabetes if left untreated.
He said diabetes often causes nerve damage, reducing sensation in the feet, while poor blood circulation delays wound healing and increases the risk of infection.
As a result, many patients seek medical care only after wounds become infected or develop tissue damage, reducing the chances of limb salvage.
Dr Varuntez said maintaining good blood sugar levels, examining the feet regularly, wearing well-fitting footwear and seeking immediate medical attention at the first sign of a wound are essential to preventing complications.
He said plastic and reconstructive surgeons play a key role in diabetic limb salvage by removing infected tissue, performing skin grafts and flap reconstruction for complex wounds, and restoring function in coordination with diabetologists, vascular surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists.
Advising people with diabetes to inspect their feet daily and avoid walking barefoot, he said wounds, redness, swelling, pus, foul smell or black discolouration should never be ignored.
“A diabetic foot wound is a medical emergency. Early intervention can prevent amputation and preserve a patient’s mobility, independence and quality of life,” he said.
