Doctors at Aster Prime Hospital Remove Rare 500-Gram Abdominal Tumour from Infant

Hyderabad, June 25 (TNT): Doctors at Aster Prime Hospital have successfully removed a rare 500-gram abdominal tumour from a six-month-old baby girl weighing just six kilograms, in what the hospital described as a remarkable medical achievement.

The infant was brought to the hospital after her parents noticed significant abdominal swelling and poor weight gain, the hospital said in a release here on Thursday.

During the initial examination, doctors detected a large abdominal mass and advised immediate imaging studies.

An ultrasound scan confirmed the presence of a tumour.

Considering its size and the risk of compression of nearby organs, a multidisciplinary team decided to undertake prompt surgical intervention.

The nearly four-hour-long surgery resulted in the successful removal of the 500-gram tumour while preserving the surrounding vital structures.

Following the operation, the infant was closely monitored in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

She was gradually weaned off ventilatory support, maintained stable vital signs and resumed feeding without significant delay.

The hospital said the child’s postoperative recovery was uneventful, with no major complications, and she was discharged on the fifth day after surgery.

Subsequent histopathological examination confirmed the tumour to be a benign mature cystic teratoma.

Commenting on the case, Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist Dr. Rishivardhan Reddy said timely recognition of symptoms by the parents and coordinated efforts by the multidisciplinary medical team were key factors behind the successful outcome.

He said early diagnosis and timely surgical management enabled the child to recover quickly and return to a normal growth trajectory.

At a one-month follow-up, the infant was found to be active, symptom-free, feeding well and gaining weight appropriately. Doctors said she continues to meet developmental milestones and remains under regular clinical observation.

The hospital noted that the case underscores the importance of early medical evaluation when infants develop unusual abdominal swelling, distension or poor weight gain, adding that prompt diagnosis and multidisciplinary care can lead to successful outcomes even in rare and potentially serious conditions.
