BIS Seizes 1.6 Kg Gold Jewellery in Hyderabad for Hallmarking Violations
Hyderabad, June 22 (TNT): The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Monday seized about 1.6 kg of gold jewellery from a jewellery shop in Abids during a search and seizure operation for alleged violations of mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016.
The operation was conducted by officials of the BIS Hyderabad Branch Office under the supervision of Director and Head P.V. Srikanth.
During the inspection, BIS officials found gold jewellery being offered for sale without mandatory BIS hallmarking and also detected jewellery articles carrying old hallmark markings, in violation of the prescribed hallmarking regulations.
The seized stock included rings, necklaces and pendants. BIS has initiated further legal action against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
Speaking on the occasion, P.V. Srikanth said consumers should purchase only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the BIS logo, purity mark and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number.
He advised consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery through the BIS CARE App before making purchases and report instances of non-hallmarked jewellery sales or misuse of BIS hallmarking to the Bureau.
Srikanth also urged jewellers to strictly comply with mandatory hallmarking requirements and ensure adherence to the provisions of the BIS Act.
BIS said it would continue market surveillance and enforcement activities to safeguard consumer interests, ensure compliance with statutory requirements and promote transparency in the jewellery trade.
