Navi Mumbai, Apr 29 (TNT): Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai on Wednesday announced it has crossed the milestone of 250 liver transplants, emerging as one of western India’s leading centres for advanced liver care and the only unit in the region to achieve this scale independently.
The hospital reported clinical outcomes with over 90 per cent survival rates, reflecting strong expertise in handling complex liver conditions through advanced transplant protocols and a multidisciplinary approach.
The programme is part of the larger Apollo Hospitals Group, which has performed more than 5,000 liver transplants globally.
Officials said the centre has demonstrated the ability to handle critical cases with timely interventions.
In one instance, a 24-year-old patient suffering from Wilson’s Disease and advanced cirrhosis underwent a successful transplant with his mother as the donor.
In another case, a patient with acute liver failure received a transplant within 24 hours.
Since its first transplant in 2017, when a father donated a portion of his liver to his teenage son, the programme has evolved to handle highly complex cases, including paediatric transplants.
The hospital has also performed transplants in infants, including a four-month-old baby, supported by a specialised paediatric transplant team.
The facility continues to attract patients from across India and overseas, including countries such as Yemen, Kenya, Tanzania, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, positioning it as a global destination for liver disease management.
Dr. Guruprasad Shetty, Lead Consultant and Unit Head, said the milestone represents “lives renewed and families restored,” highlighting the centre’s experience in complex procedures, including paediatric and ABO-incompatible transplants.
Dr. Kiran Shingote, COO and Unit Head, said the hospital’s integrated care model and fast-track transplant programme have helped reduce waiting times to 2–3 weeks, with emergency procedures carried out within 24 hours in critical cases.
The hospital, a 500-bed JCI- and NABH-accredited tertiary care facility, is equipped with advanced surgical infrastructure, over 120 ICU beds, and a dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit (LICU), supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
Officials said the achievement underscores the hospital’s commitment to delivering advanced, patient-centric liver care through expertise, infrastructure and innovation.
