AP Governor Presides Over Dr. NTR University’s 29th and 30th Convocations; Eminent Cardiologists Conferred Honorary Doctorates

Vijayawada, June 2 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Governor and Chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, presided over the combined 29th and 30th Annual Convocations of the university here on Tuesday.

The historic double convocation honoured graduates from the academic years 2023 and 2024, with degrees, medals and certificates being awarded to students from affiliated medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and allied health sciences colleges across Andhra Pradesh.

A major highlight of the event was the conferment of the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on two distinguished cardiologists for their outstanding contributions to healthcare and medical science.

Dr. C. Narasimhan, Director of Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology Services at AIG Hospitals , received the honorary doctorate during the 29th Convocation and delivered the convocation address.

Dr. P.C. Rath, Director and Head of Cardiac Sciences at Apollo Hospitals,  was honoured during the 30th Convocation.

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Narasimhan spoke about the rapid transformation of medicine through artificial intelligence, precision medicine, genomics and digital health.

While acknowledging technological advancements, he emphasised that compassion remains central to healthcare, reminding young doctors that patients place their trust not only in medical expertise but also in empathy and human connection.

He urged graduates to remain resilient, embrace lifelong learning and uphold kindness and dignity in patient care.

Presenting the university’s annual report, Vice-Chancellor Dr. P. Chandra Sekhar highlighted several academic and administrative achievements.

He announced annual grants of ₹10 lakh for three years to each Government Medical College for alumni activities, along with an additional ₹10 lakh for sports infrastructure and the conduct of inter-university, state and national tournaments.

To strengthen examination integrity, the university established a Central Command Control Unit in January 2026 for CCTV-based monitoring of theory examinations across all centres.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced Faculty Research Grants ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh for 200 faculty members and Undergraduate Student Research Scholarships ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 for 1,000 students.

Among the notable developments highlighted were the establishment of the Disease Modelling and Decision Intelligence Centre (DMDC) by the Andhra Pradesh Government within the university, installation of a 100 kWp rooftop solar power plant expected to generate nearly 1.5 lakh units of electricity annually, and a memorandum of understanding with QPRI India to support mental health and suicide prevention among medical students.

Dr. Chandra Sekhar also noted the installation of statues of Dr. B.C. Roy and Dr. Yellapragada Subba Rao on campus and informed that a university NSS volunteer had received a national award from the President of India.

Concluding his address, the Vice-Chancellor urged graduates to serve society with humility, integrity and responsibility, stressing that the ultimate purpose of healthcare is to alleviate suffering and improve human life.

He also announced that the university will celebrate its 40th anniversary on November 1, 2026.
