Self-enumeration facility for Census 2027 begins in Tamil Nadu and Tripura
New Delhi, July 17 (TNT): The Self-Enumeration (SE) facility for the Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) under the first phase of Census 2027 commenced on Friday in Tamil Nadu and Tripura, marking the start of census operations in the two states.
The self-enumeration facility will remain open till July 31, 2026, after which house-to-house field enumeration will be conducted from August 1 to August 30, 2026.
Residents of Tamil Nadu and Tripura can complete self-enumeration through the official portal se.census.gov.in. Households completing the process have been advised to keep their generated Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) and provide it to enumerators during subsequent field visits to complete the HLO process.
Meanwhile, houselisting and housing census field operations are underway in Kerala and Nagaland and will continue till July 30, 2026.
Households that do not opt for self-enumeration will be covered through physical door-to-door visits by enumerators.
The first phase of Census 2027 has already been completed in 29 States and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and other regions.
Census 2027 is being conducted for the first time using digital tools, with data collection carried out through a dedicated mobile application while retaining the traditional door-to-door enumeration process to ensure comprehensive coverage.
During the Houselisting and Housing Census phase, information related to housing conditions, household details, available amenities and household assets is being collected through a structured questionnaire containing 33 notified questions.
The government said all information collected under the Census Act, 1948 will remain strictly confidential and will be used only for statistical purposes and development planning.
Residents have been urged to actively participate in the census process and extend cooperation to enumerators during field visits.
