Telangana Police Set for Major Reforms; New Traffic, Food Safety Wings Planned

Hyderabad, May 30 (TNT): Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) C. V. Anand on Saturday announced a series of major reforms in the police department, including the creation of a Traffic Management and Road Safety Bureau, a Food Adulteration Wing and a dedicated technology team, as part of efforts to modernise policing and improve public services across the State.

Addressing a statewide video conference with Police Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, Deputy Superintendents of Police, Assistant Commissioners, Circle Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors on the theme “Adoption of Effective Policing Standards”, Anand said the department must adapt to emerging challenges and changing societal needs while ensuring accountable and citizen-friendly policing.

The DGP said special focus would be placed on combating narcotics, cybercrime, women’s safety and child trafficking.

He directed officers to strengthen Bharosa Centres and SHE Teams and ensure strict enforcement against drug-related offences that threaten the future of young people.

He also announced the formation of a special “DGP Tech Team” comprising young IPS officers to oversee implementation of technological platforms, including CCTNS 2.0, and support the rollout of advanced applications such as Hawk Eye Ultra and TG-COP Ultra.

The DGP said the police department, which had focused extensively on anti-Naxal operations for nearly three decades, must now reassess and reorganise specialised units such as the Greyhounds and Special Intelligence Branch to address present-day policing requirements.

Calling for higher standards of discipline and professionalism, Anand warned against negligence, indiscipline, corruption and violations of service rules, stressing that officers at all levels must function as leaders while maintaining the highest ethical standards.

To improve accountability, he directed all Police Commissioners and SPs to hold monthly crime review meetings and submit reports to the DGP’s Office and CID. He also proposed the appointment of four Special Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) to monitor police performance across districts.

The DGP instructed officers to conduct at least two surprise inspections every month and mandated dedicated public grievance hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily in all police units to ensure prompt redressal of citizens’ complaints.

On police welfare, Anand said the State Government had taken a positive decision regarding nearly ₹6,000 crore in pending retirement benefits and other dues across departments.

Of this amount, ₹2,000 crore had already been released, while the remaining funds would be disbursed in phases. He assured personnel that all pending benefits would be cleared.

Senior police officers, including Directors General Mahesh M. Bhagwat, V. V. Srinivasa Rao, Charu Sinha and SPF Director General Swati Lakra, participated in the conference along with senior field officers from across Telangana.
