Telangana showcases scientific waste management initiatives at national Swachh Bharat Mission meet
New Delhi, May 19 (TNT): Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Tuesday highlighted the state’s initiatives in scientific waste management, sustainable urban development and circular economy practices at the National Review Meeting on Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0 held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
The two-day national meeting was inaugurated by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and focused on strengthening sanitation, urban cleanliness and solid waste management systems across the country.
Addressing the meeting, Bhatti said the Telangana government under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was implementing sustainable urban development policies aligned with Telangana Vision–2047 and guided by the framework of CURE, PURE and RARE for balanced regional growth.
He said waste management today extends beyond garbage collection and is closely linked to climate response, environmental sustainability, employment generation and economic productivity.
The Deputy Chief Minister informed that Telangana is introducing nearly 9,596 electric Swachh Auto Tippers in urban regions to reduce carbon emissions and improve door-to-door waste collection. The vehicles will support four-way waste segregation and QR-code based monitoring systems.
He also stressed the state’s focus on decentralised waste processing systems, under which wet waste is processed closer to the source while dry waste is scientifically segregated and channelled into recycling systems to reduce landfill burden.
Referring to legacy waste remediation, Bhatti said the Telangana government was receiving technical support from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for scientific management of the Jawaharnagar dump yard in Hyderabad. He added that around 22 lakh metric tonnes of waste spread across 40 acres at the Autonagar dump site were being processed through biomining, with nearly 30 per cent already completed.
“Our goal is to transform dump yards into development centres,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said sanitation drives under the 99-Day Praja Palana–Pragathi Action Plan included removal of garbage vulnerable points, e-waste collection campaigns, demolition waste clearance and legacy waste management across urban local bodies in the state.
He also referred to the proposed Eco-Town project at Bandaraviryala and Siddapur, inspired by Japan’s Kitakyushu model, as an important step towards strengthening Telangana’s circular economy ecosystem.
Calling for a “War on Waste – Waste to Wealth” approach, Bhatti urged the Centre to extend financial support and viability gap funding for waste-to-energy, recycling and circular economy projects.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu, senior officials from various states, Telangana Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan and GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan among others.
