New Delhi, Apr 24 (TNT): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on a blast at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district that claimed at least 18 lives and left six others injured.
The incident occurred on April 19 in Kattanarpatti area, where reportedly over 100 workers, including women, were present at the factory when the explosion took place.
The blast is suspected to have been triggered by friction during the chemical mixing process.
Observing that the report, if true, raises serious issues of human rights violations, the Commission has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has asked for information on the health condition of the injured, progress of the investigation and details of compensation, if any, provided to the next of kin of the deceased and those injured.
According to reports, the injured workers were shifted to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.
