President Murmu Addresses Nalanda University Convocation, Emphasises Knowledge and Global Dialogue

Rajgir (Bihar), Mar 31 (TNT): President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday attended and addressed the convocation ceremony of Nalanda University, highlighting the institution’s role in advancing knowledge, dialogue and global cooperation.

Speaking on the occasion, the President described the convocation as a reaffirmation of a civilisational promise that knowledge will endure and continue to serve humanity.

She congratulated the graduating students, noting that their achievements reflect perseverance, discipline and intellectual commitment.

Murmu expressed satisfaction that more than half of the graduating cohort comprised international students from over 30 countries, underlining Nalanda’s growing global appeal.

Recalling the legacy of the ancient Nalanda University, she said it stood as a renowned centre of learning for nearly eight centuries, and its decline was a loss not just for India but for the world.

She noted that its revival symbolises a collective national and international effort to restore that legacy in a modern context.

The President said the resurgence of Nalanda reflects visionary leadership, institutional commitment and cooperation among partner nations, demonstrating how shared values can drive global progress.

Highlighting the university’s philosophical foundations, she said ancient Nalanda encouraged diverse ideologies, debate and dialogue, linking knowledge with ethics and societal welfare—an approach that remains relevant in today’s complex world.

She emphasised the need for independent and critical thinking rooted in compassion, expressing confidence that Nalanda University will emerge as a leading global institution distinguished by both academic excellence and values.

Murmu also underscored India’s deep connection with Buddhist philosophy and called for strengthening Buddhist studies rooted in India’s civilisational traditions while engaging with its wider Asian context.

She said Nalanda has the potential to become a global centre for Buddhist scholarship.

Referring to the vast library of the ancient Nalanda, believed to have housed millions of manuscripts, she said the institution being built today will serve as a lasting legacy.

She added that as India moves towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, institutions like Nalanda University will play a crucial role in shaping the future.
