Training key to effective police leadership, says Telangana DGP
Hyderabad, Sept 30 (TNT): Telangana Director-General of Police C.V. Anand on Wednesday said training played a crucial role in shaping disciplined, competent and effective police officers, urging probationary Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to uphold integrity, ethics and professionalism throughout their careers.
Interacting with 112 probationary DSPs undergoing training at the R.B.V.R.R. Telangana Police Academy here, Anand delivered a session on police leadership, highlighting the importance of courage, vision, integrity, teamwork, impartiality, communication skills, hard work, digital awareness, innovation and humility.
Emphasising the importance of ethics, he cautioned the probationers against mistakes that could damage their reputations and said they must protect their professional credibility throughout their careers.
The DGP advised the trainees to develop a thorough understanding of the challenges they would face in the field, particularly in public interaction, crime investigation, law enforcement and the use of technology in policing.
He said police officers needed more than legal knowledge, stressing the importance of leadership, a humane approach, investigative skills, physical fitness and effective communication with citizens.
“The ultimate objective of policing is to ensure safety and provide timely justice to citizens,” Anand said, urging the probationers to develop into responsible leaders capable of meeting the changing demands of policing.
Telangana Police Academy Director Abhilasha Bisht said the professional course had 112 trainees, including 74 men and 38 women, and would run for approximately 10 months.
The programme combines indoor and outdoor training, covering criminal law, criminology, investigation techniques, leadership, decision-making and physical fitness.
The curriculum includes the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and specialised modules on crime investigation, model policing, property-related offences and financial crimes.
The trainees also receive practical exposure through combat exercises, horse riding, swimming and weapons training, she said.
Later, DGP Anand presented prizes to the winners of the fifth Telangana Police Sports and Games Meet-2026, Cluster-C, held at the police academy.
The three-day event, which began on September 28, concluded on Wednesday.
More than 700 police personnel, ranging from constables to IPS officers, participated in badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis competitions.
Anand said sports were essential for maintaining the physical and mental fitness of police personnel working under demanding conditions.
He advised officers to devote at least an hour every day to sports or physical exercise.
Explaining the cluster-based format, he said it was intended to widen participation, identify promising athletes and prepare them for national-level competitions, including the All India Police Sports and Games.
He expressed hope that participants who excelled at the cluster level would go on to represent Telangana in state and national competitions.
