Telangana: Two newborns die in fire at RIMS Adilabad SNCU; Govt orders probe
Adilabad (Telangana), Sept 22 (TNT): Two newborns, including a five-day-old baby, died after a fire broke out at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here late on Monday night, following an explosion reportedly involving an air-conditioner.
The fire broke out around 11.50 p.m., police said.
The incident reportedly occurred after an air-conditioner in the SNCU exploded, triggering the fire.
The exact cause of the blaze, however, was yet to be ascertained.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed officials to submit a report, an official release said on Tuesday.
He also instructed authorities to strengthen safety measures in all hospitals to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Revanth Reddy expressed deep grief over the deaths of the two infants and conveyed his condolences to their bereaved families.
He directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the children undergoing treatment at the hospital and to continuously monitor their health.
Twenty-seven other infants admitted to the ward were safely rescued and shifted to nearby private hospitals. The condition of two of them was reported to be critical.
A fire tender was rushed to the hospital after receiving information and brought the blaze under control.
District Collector Rajarshi Shah reached the hospital after receiving information and reviewed the situation. Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan and RIMS Director Jaisingh also visited the hospital.
