Telangana tops mobile recovery with 1.24 lakh devices via CEIR

Hyderabad, apr 28 (TNT): Telangana has emerged as the top-performing state in the country in recovering stolen and missing mobile phones, with a total of 1,24,850 devices traced and restored to users, officials said.

The Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to curb mobile theft and counterfeit devices, is being implemented across all 780 police stations in the state, with CID Telangana acting as the nodal agency.

The data, covering the period from April 20, 2023 to April 26, 2026, showed that over 4.82 lakh devices were blocked, while more than 2.82 lakh traceability reports were generated, According to Ms  Charu Sinha, DG, CID.

Of these, 1,24,850 mobile phones have been successfully traced and unblocked, setting a national benchmark in recovery, she said.

Telangana achieved this despite launching the CEIR portal later than pilot states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi and North Eastern states.

A range of measures, including training programmes for police personnel, public awareness campaigns, and the formation of a dedicated technical team, have contributed to the success of the initiative.

The system has also been integrated with the Telangana Police Citizen Portal, enabling citizens to report lost or stolen devices online.

Regular monitoring, inter-departmental coordination and prompt action at the police station level have played a key role in improving recovery rates, with efforts continuing to trace devices used in other states.

The CEIR initiative has been described as a citizen-friendly service, helping individuals recover lost devices efficiently while strengthening efforts to tackle mobile theft across the state.
