Telangana to Use AI to Plug GST Leakages, Boost Revenue
Hyderabad, Aug. 7 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and noted economist Dr. Arvind Subramanian on Friday discussed leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to plug leakages in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections and strengthen the State’s revenue mobilisation without affecting ease of doing business.
During a meeting at the Bodhi Pavilion of the MCR Human Resource Development Institute (MCRHRD) here, the two deliberated on reforms in the GST and Excise Departments and strategies to improve the State’s fiscal health.
The Chief Minister briefed Subramanian on measures initiated by the State Government to curb GST leakages and informed him that an AI-driven system was being introduced to streamline the functioning of GST officials through specialised data analytics to improve tax collection.
Revanth Reddy said the proposed system would enhance revenue mobilisation without causing inconvenience to traders or affecting business activity.
Subramanian stressed that technology should be used not only to improve tax collections but also to enhance the Ease of Doing Business.
He suggested developing an AI-enabled coordination mechanism among the Municipal Administration, RERA, Panchayat Raj, Electricity, Finance and Commercial Taxes departments to prevent revenue leakage related to the construction sector.
Responding to the suggestion, the Chief Minister directed officials to collect details of construction material requirements and estimated tax liabilities at the project approval stage for large building and infrastructure works.
He also suggested integrating the data with platforms such as MeeSeva, Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to improve administrative efficiency and strengthen revenue monitoring.
Chief Minister’s Advisor K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Commercial Taxes and Excise Secretary Raghunandan Rao, Excise Commissioner Hari Kiran, and other senior officials attended the meeting.
