: Telangana Prisons Plans Govt ITI at Cherlapalli Jail for Inmate Skill Development

Hyderabad, June 15 (TNT): The Telangana Prisons Department has initiated steps to establish a Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) within the premises of Central Prison, Cherlapalli, with the objective of providing vocational and technical training to inmates and improving their employment prospects after release.

As part of the preparations, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Dr. Soumya Mishra on Monday visited the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Hyderabad, and the National Skill Training Institute for Women (NSTI-W), Hyderabad, to study infrastructure requirements, training methodologies, affiliation procedures and course delivery systems.

According to an official release, the proposed ITI aims to impart industry-oriented skills to prisoners, enabling them to secure employment and become self-reliant after completing their prison terms. The initiative is also intended to support the social reintegration of inmates and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

During her visit to the NSTI institutions, Dr. Mishra interacted with trainees and faculty members and reviewed various aspects of vocational education and skill development.

She also held discussions with Regional Director of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ravi Chilukoti and NSTI-W Joint Director and Principal Priya on curriculum implementation, certification procedures and possible collaboration in prisoner rehabilitation programmes.

Subsequently, the Director General visited Central Prison, Cherlapalli, and reviewed the arrangements being made for the proposed institute, including infrastructure requirements, affiliation procedures and operational planning.

She directed officials to expedite the necessary measures for early establishment of the institute and stressed the importance of providing quality technical education within correctional institutions.

Inspector General of Prisons N. Murali Babu, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Dr. D. Srinivas, Assistant Director of Industries M. Khalid Akther, Central Prison Superintendent G. Pramod and other officials attended the review.
