Hyderabad, May 9 (TNT): Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday said the Telangana Government has prepared plans to transform Hyderabad into a “traffic-free city” through development of underpasses, surface roads and elevated corridor networks.
Addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Affairs and Housing here, the Chief Minister said the government would also develop multi-level parking facilities and a multi-modal transport system to address growing traffic congestion in the city.
The meeting was attended by Standing Committee Chairperson M. Srinivas Reddy and committee members, including Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy.
Revanth Reddy said widening roads alone would not be sufficient to effectively manage Hyderabad’s traffic challenges and stressed the need for integrated transportation infrastructure through a multi-modal approach.
He said the government had adopted a multi-pronged strategy to facilitate smoother traffic flow in key areas through construction of underpasses, elevated corridors and surface roads.
Highlighting rapid urbanisation challenges, the Chief Minister said the government had formulated plans to develop Telangana through three economic zones — Core Urban Region Economy (CURE), Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE) and Rural Agriculture Region Economy (RARE).
Under the plan, areas within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) would be developed as a service-sector hub under CURE, while the region between the Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road under PURE would focus on manufacturing activities, he said.
Areas beyond the Regional Ring Road (RRR) under RARE would be promoted as hubs for agriculture and allied sectors.
The Chief Minister also briefed the committee on the ‘Telangana Rising 2047’ vision document aimed at positioning the state as a $1 trillion economy by 2034 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
As part of measures to reduce air pollution, Revanth Reddy said the government was introducing electric buses into the RTC fleet in Hyderabad and planning conversion of existing auto-rickshaws within the city into electric vehicles free of cost.
The Chief Minister also sought support from the Centre for implementation of the Musi River rejuvenation project and other urban development initiatives.
Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee praised the Musi River rejuvenation initiative and described it as a first-of-its-kind project in the country aimed at improving the living standards of Hyderabad residents.
