Telangana MP Vamsi Krishna Alleges Restrictions on Youth Protesting at Jantar Mantar
In a statement, the MP criticised the Narendra Modi government, claiming that restrictions on public transport and the deployment of security personnel were aimed at preventing young people from raising their voices.
He alleged that 56 metro stations had been closed, bus services suspended and more than 40,000 police and Rapid Action Force personnel deployed.
He further claimed that citizens were being detained at airports, independent journalists were being detained and internet services had been suspended within a four-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar.
Vamsi Krishna said the alleged restrictions undermined democratic rights and drew a comparison with British colonial rule, referring to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
He said efforts to protect democracy and people’s rights would continue, adding that the freedom struggle had inspired him and others to raise their voices against restrictions on peaceful protest.
The MP reiterated that safeguarding democratic rights and ensuring the freedom to express dissent were essential to the country’s democratic principles.
