Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Challenges BRS to Special Assembly Debate on Farmers’ Issues
Hyderabad, June 30 (TNT) : Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday challenged the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to a special session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly to debate the performance of the previous BRS government and the Congress government on farmers’ welfare.
Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister said the Congress government had been working since assuming office on December 7, 2023, to transform agriculture into a profitable and dignified occupation.
He alleged that the previous BRS government had left Telangana under severe financial stress despite inheriting a fiscally strong state.
Revanth Reddy claimed that Telangana’s outstanding debt stood at around ₹69,000 crore when the state was formed in 2014 and had risen to ₹8.11 lakh crore by the time the Congress assumed office in December 2023.
He alleged that the previous government had borrowed extensively, pushing the state into a debt trap.
The Chief Minister further alleged that the BRS administration had delayed salary payments to government employees, failed to clear dues of school uniform suppliers, local bodies and self-help groups, and left arrears of about ₹8,000 crore to retired employees.
He said the Congress government had restored timely salary payments despite financial constraints and was taking steps to revive the state’s finances.
Revanth Reddy also accused the previous government of failing to fulfil key promises, including waiver of crop loans up to ₹1 lakh, allotment of three acres of land to Dalit families and expansion of irrigation to one crore acres.
Referring to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, he alleged that despite spending over ₹1.02 lakh crore, parts of the project became dysfunctional within two years.
He claimed that Telangana farmers produced 2.8 crore metric tonnes of paddy over the past three years even without water from the project.
The Chief Minister said the government had improved the financial position of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation and the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) while replacing the Dharani land records system with the Bhu Bharathi initiative to address land-related issues.
Launching a sharp political attack on BRS president and former Chief Minsiter K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), Revanth Reddy made several allegations regarding the functioning of the previous government and asserted that the people of Telangana had rejected the BRS.
He also criticised KCR over allegations relating to phone tapping and surveillance, referring to public remarks made by members of the former Chief Minister’s family.
