Telangana: BRS seeks Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into ECI functioning
Hyderabad, Sept 23 (TNT): BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and conduct a court-monitored inquiry.
Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan, KTR said the ECI, being a constitutional body, should remain above suspicion and argued that the Supreme Court was the appropriate forum to examine the concerns being raised.
“ECI is a constitutional body. We cannot believe any other agency to investigate other than the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court needs to take cognisance of what former Election Commissioners are saying and launch a suo motu inquiry into the matter,” he said.
KTR said he had earlier led a BRS delegation to New Delhi to meet the three Election Commissioners and raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
He said similar concerns were formally raised during the Bihar elections, seeking clarification on the process and greater transparency.
He said questions and doubts continued to persist despite the representations and maintained that a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry would help address the concerns and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
The ECI has said that differing views are part of its deliberative process and that decisions taken by the full Commission, including those related to SIR, were unanimous.
