Tata Steel develops fire-resistant structural steel for safer buildings
Mumbai, Oct 5 (TNT): Tata Steel on Monday said it has developed a hot-rolled, fire-resistant E350 structural steel designed to help buildings and engineering structures retain structural integrity for longer during a fire.
The steel has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under IS 15103, the Indian standard for fire-resistant structural steel, the company said in a release.
The company said the steel can retain two-thirds of its room-temperature yield strength at 600 degrees Celsius for up to three hours, helping provide additional time for evacuation during a fire.
The enhanced strength retention is achieved through an optimised combination of microalloying elements and microstructural engineering, it said.
Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, New Material Business and Graphene, Tata Steel, said material innovation was critical to improving structural resilience as fire safety gained greater importance in modern infrastructure.
The steel is suitable for manufacturing fire-resistant structural components, including structural hollow tubes and sections used in pre-engineered buildings, the company added.
