SVIMS treats woman with complex abdominal trauma through laparoscopic surgery
Tirupati, Sept 30 (TNT): Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, has successfully treated a 60-year-old woman with a complex traumatic diaphragmatic hernia following a serious accident, using laparoscopic surgery and multidisciplinary critical care.
The patient, a resident of Sundupalli in Kadapa district, was referred to SVIMS after her condition deteriorated at another hospital.
She was admitted with severe respiratory distress and complications, including spinal injuries and pneumonia, requiring ventilatory support.
Investigations revealed a traumatic left diaphragmatic hernia with eventration, a condition in which an injury to the diaphragm can allow abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity, affecting lung function, the Institute said in a release here.
The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology performed a laparoscopic left diaphragmatic hernia repair with eventration plication on August 15, 2026.
Following the procedure, the patient required prolonged intensive care and ventilatory support.
During her recovery, she developed supraventricular tachycardia and a seizure episode.
The complications were managed with support from the departments of Cardiology and Neurology, along with Critical Care, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, the Blood Bank and nursing teams. After her condition improved, she was discharged on September 30.
SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor Dr Gudaru Jagadesh said the outcome reflected the expertise and coordination of the multidisciplinary medical teams.
He said the patient’s treatment was supported through the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, ensuring access to advanced surgical and critical care.

He said the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology provides specialised referral services for complex abdominal trauma, emergency gastrointestinal conditions, gastrointestinal cancers, hepatopancreatobiliary disorders and advanced minimally invasive surgery.
Dr Jagadesh congratulated the surgical team, led by Prof. Dr C. Chandramaliteeswaran and department head Dr G. Sivarama Krishna, along with the supporting specialists and nursing staff, for their role in the patient’s treatment and recovery.
SVIMS said its integrated multidisciplinary facilities enable it to manage complex surgical cases requiring advanced procedures and intensive postoperative care.
