SCR, IIT Bombay Sign MoU for Railway Track Occupancy Analysis
Hyderabad, Aug. 6 (TNT): South Central Railway (SCR) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to develop a framework for analysing railway track occupancy, junction and yard capacity, aimed at enhancing safety and operational efficiency across the railway network.
SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, Principal Chief Engineer D. Anjaneyulu Reddy, Secunderabad Divisional Railway Manager Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan and other senior railway officials attended the event, while Prof. Milind Sohoni of IIT Bombay participated through video conference.
Under the agreement, IIT Bombay will undertake a pilot project to develop software capable of analysing large volumes of signalling data generated by railway data loggers and converting it into visual representations of train movements, crossings, shunting operations and detentions, the SCR said in a release here.
The analytical tool is expected to help railway officials identify operational bottlenecks, study train detention patterns and improve train handling while strengthening safety monitoring.
The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with data validation, movement analysis, visualisation tools and the development of safety and efficiency metrics.
Based on the pilot’s outcome, the collaboration is proposed to be expanded to larger station layouts, advanced analytics dashboards and eventual integration with railway signalling systems for real-time movement analysis and operational support.
Speaking on the occasion, SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava said the collaboration would help develop engineering solutions to address operational challenges arising from increasing rail traffic and limited scope for infrastructure expansion in congested railway yards.
He said simulation-based analysis would facilitate optimal utilisation of existing assets by assessing the impact of yard remodelling and interlocking changes before implementation.
