PROTECT LUNG HEALTH AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE: PULMONOLOGIST

Hyderabad, Sept 24 (TNT): Lung health needs attention at every stage of life, with smoking, air pollution, dust, chemical exposure, infections and allergies posing significant risks, said Dr. Shubhakar Nadella, Consultant Clinical and Interventional Pulmonologist, KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur.

Ahead of World Lung Day on September 25, Dr. Nadella said the 2026 theme, ‘A Lifetime of Lung Health’, highlights the need to protect lung health from childhood to old age.

He said smoking remains one of the major threats to lung health and urged smokers to quit, while stressing the need to protect children, elderly people and pregnant women from second-hand smoke.

Air pollution and occupational exposure to dust and chemicals are also contributing to respiratory problems, he said, adding that asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are among the common respiratory conditions.

Dr. Nadella advised people not to ignore persistent cough, breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing during exertion or blood in sputum, particularly those exposed to smoking, dust or pollution.

He recommended quitting tobacco, reducing exposure to pollution and occupational dust, using appropriate masks, exercising regularly, taking recommended vaccinations and seeking timely medical advice to maintain lung health.
