NGRI former Chief Scientist Dr Mekala Ram Mohan appointed WIHG Director, Dehradun
Hyderabad, Aug 12 (TNT): Dr Mekala Ram Mohan, distinguished geoscientist and former Chief Scientist at CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad, has been appointed Director of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, a reputed autonomous R&D institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
Dr Ram Mohan was associated with CSIR-NGRI for over 26 years, from October 1999 until his recent move on lien to the University of Hyderabad, where he joined as Professor at the Centre for Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, according to a release issued by NGRI.
A specialist in geochemistry and petrology, Dr Ram Mohan made significant contributions to Earth science research, particularly in the areas of Archean geodynamics, continental crustal evolution and the geological history of the Indian Shield.
His research combined field-based geological investigations with petrological and geochemical approaches to study the processes involved in the development of Earth’s early crust and its subsequent geological evolution.
Besides his research work, he was actively involved in developing scientific programmes, academic activities, mentoring research students and fostering research collaborations at CSIR-NGRI.
His contributions to Earth sciences have been recognised through several prestigious honours, including Fellowship of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), the National Geoscience Award, H. H. Read Memorial Gold Medal, Bellur Rama Rao Birth Centenary Award and Krishnan Gold Medal.
His appointment as Director of WIHG marks another significant milestone in his scientific career. CSIR-NGRI congratulated Dr Ram Mohan and wished him success in his new leadership role.
