Navi Mumbai Airport notified as new entry point for drug imports

New Delhi, July 8 (TNT): The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has permitted the import of drugs through the newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai Airport in Maharashtra, a move aimed at strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain and facilitating ease of trade.

The Ministry has amended Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945, to include Navi Mumbai Airport in the list of airports authorised for the import of drugs into the country.

The amendment was notified after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

With the latest addition, the total number of designated ports of entry—including airports, seaports, road and rail terminals—for drug imports has increased to 42.

According to the Ministry, the amendment is expected to facilitate smoother movement of pharmaceutical consignments, strengthen logistics infrastructure and provide importers with greater flexibility by offering an additional gateway for importing medicines into India.

The Ministry said the initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework, improve trade facilitation and promote Ease of Doing Business while maintaining effective regulatory oversight of imported drugs.
