NALSAR Law University to Consult Executive Council on BCI Inquiry into Convocation Row
Hyderabad, Aug 14 (TNT): NALSAR University of Law has said it will consult its Executive Council on a request from the Bar Council of India (BCI) seeking an inquiry into persons involved in recent developments concerning the university’s upcoming convocation.
In a press release on Thursday evening, the university said it received a BCI letter directing the disallowance of enrolment of all graduating B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) students of the 2026 batch and seeking an inquiry report into those involved in the developments concerning the convocation.
The university subsequently received another letter from the BCI rescinding the directive to State Bar Councils disallowing enrolment of the graduating students.
However, the university said the second letter retained the requirement that Vice-Chancellor Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao submit an inquiry report on the persons involved.
NALSAR said, given the nature of the request, it would have to consider whether conducting such an inquiry would amount to a constitutional exercise of its powers.
It said the matter would be placed before the Executive Council, the university’s highest decision-making body, to assess whether such an inquiry would be constitutional and permissible under its governance regulations.
The outcome of the consultation with the Executive Council would be communicated to the BCI, the University added.
It may be mentioned that on August 10, a group of NALSAR Law University students urged the university to reconsider its decision to invite the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to its upcoming convocation, taking exception to his remarks during the hearing on alleged police excesses against students who marched towards Parliament on July 20.
The university has not yet finalised the date of the convocation. Traditionally, the CJI has been invited as the chief guest for the event.
