Hyd: MIM Prez Owaisi Condemns BCI Action Against NALSAR Students
Hyderabad, Aug 14 (TNT) : MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly condemned the Bar Council of India’s (BCI) action against NALSAR University of Law students over a campaign concerning the participation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at the university’s convocation.
In a post on social media platform X on Friday, Owaisi said the BCI Chairman had initially directed State Bar Councils not to enrol NALSAR’s 2026 law graduates as advocates, following their opposition to the invitation extended to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to attend the university’s convocation. The BCI later withdrew the order and instead ordered an inquiry into the student campaign over the CJI’s participation in the convocation.
Questioning the authority of the BCI and its Chairman to take such action, Owaisi said students had every right to object to the participation of a public figure at their university.
“You can disagree but not threaten their careers just because it troubles you,” he said.
Owaisi alleged that the larger objective appeared to be to discourage independent thinking in law universities and create a compliant academic culture.
Describing the action as “brazen bullying of young people”, Owaisi said the message appeared to be that students should fall in line and not challenge those in positions of power.
It may be mentioned that on August 10, a group of NALSAR Law University students urged the university to reconsider its decision to invite the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to its upcoming convocation, taking exception to his remarks during the hearing on alleged police excesses against students who marched towards Parliament on July 20.
The university has not yet finalised the date of the convocation. Traditionally, the CJI has been invited as the chief guest for the event.
