London-Based Thalassemia Patient Shares 57-Year Journey of Resilience at Hyderabad Society
Hyderabad, Sept 29 (TNT): Ajay Gandhi, a 57-year-old Thalassemia Major patient from London who has lived with the condition for nearly six decades, visited the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) in Hyderabad on Monday and interacted with patients and their families, sharing his experiences and challenges.
Gandhi spoke about his childhood, treatment journey, career, marriage and family life, highlighting the role of disciplined treatment, medical care, family support and perseverance in helping him lead a fulfilling life despite the chronic blood disorder.
The interaction, held on the TSCS premises, was attended by hundreds of Thalassemia and Sickle Cell patients and their parents.
TSCS President Dr Chandrakant Agarwal, Chief Medical Research Officer and Secretary Dr Suman Jain, Vice-President Ratnavali, Senior Research Scientist Dr Padma and Manoj Rupani were also present.
Gandhi said Thalassemia was a part of his life but did not define who he was.
He emphasised the importance of determination, consistent medical treatment, family support and faith in navigating the challenges associated with the condition.
During the visit, he appreciated TSCS for providing comprehensive treatment facilities and support to patients free of cost.
He also acknowledged the society’s efforts to serve thousands of patients, including those travelling long distances from different parts of the country to access care.
Speaking on the occasion, Gandhi said his interaction with patients and parents was a moving experience and expressed hope that his journey would encourage them to pursue their ambitions and face the future with confidence.
TSCS President Dr Chandrakant Agarwal said Gandhi’s journey demonstrated how adherence to treatment, medical advancements and family support could help patients manage the challenges associated with Thalassemia Major and lead fulfilling lives.
He said the society aimed to ensure that every patient received comprehensive care, support and encouragement, irrespective of their financial circumstances.
